The movie, based on chief minister M Karunanidhi's historical novel, tells the story of warrior twins Ponnar and Shankar, who are revered as gods in the Kongu belt of Tamil Nadu. Periyamalai Gounder (Vijayakumar) arranges the wedding of his daughter Thamarai (Kushboo) with Mandhiappan (Prakash Raj). But Thamarai marries Nellian Kondan (Jayaram), even though her family is opposed to it, and leaves the kingdom to begin her life anew. Many years later, Ponnar and Shankar (both played by Prashanth), disciples of Raaki Annan (Rajkiran), are the darlings of the people for fighting against injustice. At a festival, they save Muthaayi ( Divya Parameswaran) and Pavalaayi (Pooja Chopra) without knowing that they are the daughters of their uncle Chinnamalai Gounder (Ponvannan). How they marry the girls, and save their kingdom from the evil designs of Mandhiappan and Thalaiyoor Kali (Napoleon) makes the rest of the movie.
